Pro Tip: Don’t forget to take the CenturyLink Internet speed test here; it will help you to determine the exact speed of your connection.

The CenturyLink Internet service facilitates its subscribers with high-end equipment, able to deliver a fast and secure wireless connection for multiple devices. And when you are subscribed to CenturyLink Complete WiFi, you set yourself up to draw maximum benefit from the capabilities of your leased wireless modem. However, there would be days when your CenturyLink WiFi may experience connectivity problems, from slow speeds to drop in connection. And it could be due to a number of reasons within or beyond the control of the provider. But, quite often the issue is in fact at the user’s end, and quite simple to resolve with a DIY job. Unless, if it is some sort of outage and in that case, we have written down a guide for you to follow.

So, don’t remain stuck with slow internet speed. You can try to optimize your CenturyLink Internet so it runs faster, and gets you rid of excessive buffering or load times. Let’s take a look!

Check Your Wireless Modem/Router Location

The location of your WiFi modem/router is critical to the strength of the signal around the house. If your internet equipment is not placed right, there is a high chance you won’t be able to receive a strong and stable signal in parts of the house that are farther away or blocked off by walls. The farther away you move with your internet-enabled device, the more likely you are to lose signal strength.

The ideal place to setup your CenturyLink WiFi Internet equipment is an area that is central to your house and is not blocked off by brick walls, or surrounded by thick and heavy doors or windows. Preferably also far from electronic appliances, and large water containers like aquariums. Give the signals from the wireless modem all the room to travel farther out in all directions. According to tech experts, your WiFi modem must also be placed higher above the floor level to keep the signal from getting cluttered.

Keep your WiFi device on an open shelf or a tiny wooden wall-bracket. You can even place it on the top of a kitchen cabinet or cupboard, etc.

The right position/location can help reduce the negative impact of clutter around your internet equipment, and you can expect your CenturyLink Internet signals to travel more freely.

Check Your Wired Connections

Although it sounds very obvious, it is one of the most common, and often ignored, causes of a poor internet connection. Therefore, the next time you are faced with network instability, just make sure to check all wired connections.

  • Look for the black power cable which connects the power port of the wireless modem to the wall outlet.
  • Check if the green cable which connects the DSL port on the modem to the phone jack.
  • Finally, check the yellow Ethernet cable running between the Ethernet ports on the PC and the modem.

Restart Your Internet Device

It is probably the most effective and the easiest way to fix your internet issues. Just try unplugging the modem and let it remain disconnected for about five minutes. Make sure all the status indicator lights on the modem are switched off. Then re-plug the modem and try reconnecting to CenturyLink WiFi. Power cycling the internet equipment may just make your CenturyLink Internet faster.

Reset Your Wireless Modem

Another way to fix your connectivity issues is to reset your WiFi modem. It will return to the factory settings, but this can be the remedy for your slow connection speed. If however you have not yet tried out a reboot, do that first, and see if that helps avoid a reset.

There are 2 ways you can reset the CenturyLink Modem. Via the wireless modem’s user settings web interface or manually.

Reset via User Settings Web Interface

  • Connect a computer or tablet to the CenturyLink Internet via an Ethernet cable connected to your modem or via WiFi.
  • In your browser window type http://192.168.0.1 in the URL field.
  • Next, log in to the modem's settings interface with the admin username and password, that is printed on the modem sticker. Remember this info is different from the wireless network name (SSID) and WiFi password (security key).
  • Go from Main Menu > Utilities > Restore Modem to Factory Default State.
  • The modem may take up to 5 minutes for the factory reset to complete.
  • Once done, the power light will turn orange, and you will have to run through the activation process like it was done at the time of installation. You will need your CenturyLink account login information to be able to reconfigure the device.
  • Once the internet status light on the modem turns green, you are ready to go. Don’t forget, all devices that were connected to CenturyLink WiFi before the reset, must be reconnected. The reset will also return the SSID and CenturyLink WiFi password to default info.

Reset Manually

  • With the modem powered on, use a thin pointed object like a pen to press the reset button until you feel or hear a slight click. This button is usually red in color and is at the rear of the device.
  • Press for 10 seconds and then release when the power light turns amber.
  • The CenturyLink Gateway can take up to 5 minutes to complete the factory reset. When the process is complete, the power light will again turn orange.
  • Now it’s time for modem activation like it was done at the first setup. Go to http://connect.centurylink.com, and complete the process as prompted. Just make sure you have your account login information handy so you can configure the modem. Or else use the My CenturyLink mobile app to activate the service.
  • When the internet status light on the CenturyLink device turns green, you will be able to access the internet.

Limit the Number of Connected Devices

Sometimes, there maybe a long list of connected devices that you know nothing about. Generally, we tend to think our smartphone is the only device that's connected to the internet. But in reality, there are a lot of other things too.

  • Smart Home devices
  • Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant
  • Security gadgets/tools (CCTVs, doorbells)
  • Smart appliances such as smart TVs and more
  • Tiles and other GPS trackers for keys, etc.
  • Air purifiers

Always make sure to disconnect devices when they can stay offline. The lesser is the number of unused connected devices, the better chance your CenturyLink Internet will run faster.

Minimize Streaming Activities during Work Hours

It can always be great to allot specific timings to all your work and leisure related activities. For instance, we all know streaming media services consume a lot of bandwidth. Which can leave a negative impact on your overall internet speed. So if there is excessive streaming that occurs while you work or learn online, you must ensure this is reduced to the minimum. And, the same holds true for online gaming.
