Xfinity has been a household name for a good while and for good reason too. It is the largest residential ISPs in the U.S., with over 30 million broadband subscribers in more than 35 states. Its far spread out network coverage plays a critical role in making Xfinity services readily accessible to nearly 112 million people. But that is not all.
Xfinity has a lot to offer from high-speed internet to a unique TV service and attractive bundle deals. The many Xfinity Internet speed tiers give everyone the option to choose a plan depending upon their needs. And, one of the many perks of an Xfinity Internet subscription is access to free Xfinity hotspots when out-of-home.
In this article, we discuss how you can make the most out of this handy feature as an Xfinity Internet subscriber. Read on, and help yourself stay connected on the go.
Xfinity has over 20 million hotspots in service locations across its nationwide footprint. Although not all areas may be as densely dotted with hotspots as others, every time you step out of the house you are likely to have a good internet connection to access. What makes access to free Xfinity hotspots so valuable is you don’t just get communal WiFi to power your device on the go, but a secure high-speed connection! Which of course is of prime importance whenever you are using an open network.
If you are subscribed to post-pay Xfinity Internet or have a Comcast Business account, you’re eligible to use the free Xfinity WiFi hotspots. As a new Xfinity subscriber, you can start using the hotspots even before the equipment is set up at your home. Xfinity Mobile users also get to use the Xfinity hotspots without an additional cost.
Xfinity WiFi hotspots usually show up in the list of available networks on your device as Xfinity wifi or XFINITY when you are in the range. To locate an Xfinity hotspot just check the online availability map. You can also use the Xfinity app to locate the nearest hotspot via the Connect tab.
To connect to the secure XFINITY hotspots, however, you’ll have to download the free Xfinity WiFi Hotspots app from the App Store or Google Play. It is now exclusive to Xfinity Internet customers. The app will not only tell about any Xfinity hotspots near you but give access to the newest security features where available. Xfinity Mobile customers do not require this app because their connection is established automatically via the secure profile.
If you want to use an Xfinity WiFi hotspot you must have a wireless device like a cell phone, laptop, or tablet. iOS devices running on 11.0 or higher, Android devices operating on 4.4 or higher, Mac systems using OS X Lion (10.7) or later, and Windows-based systems running on Windows 10 or later - will work with secure Xfinity WiFi hotspots.
Some devices like Chromebooks, Linux PCs, Blackberry phones, and Amazon Kindle are however not supported for now, and would not work with a secure XFINITY Hotspot.
Connecting to an Xfinity hotspot is fairly easy and gives you instant access to a secure connection. We have included a couple of short guides below to help you through the process.
Note: After signing into the app once, your device will automatically connect to any Xfinity hotspots within range.
Once you have connected to an Xfinity WiFi hotspot, you can browse the internet without any security concerns. Your network is secure, and you are protected through your session. Using an Xfinity Hotspot does not count against your monthly data usage if you are an Xfinity Internet user. So you don't have to worry about that front.
If for any reason you prefer to connect without having to download the Xfinity WiFi Hotspot app, you can do so manually via xfinitywifi instead of the secure XFINITY network. And this is how you’ll go about it:
As we said, if you have the Xfinity WiFi Hotspot app, once you’ve signed in and added the Xfinity hotspot network, your device will automatically connect when in range. The Xfinity WiFi secure profile gives you access to the secure XFINITY hotspot network without having to sign in each time. However, any changes to your account are likely to affect the automatic sign-in. For instance, if the password for your Xfinity account changes, you will have to reinstall your profile with the new details so as to enable automatic sign-in to XFINITY hotspots.
You can connect up to 10 devices to Xfinity WiFi at a time. But to use Xfinity WiFi with automatic sign-in on more than one device, you’ll have to sign into and register each separately.
Automatic sign-in is not supported if you are not an Xfinity Internet user. All Xfinity Mobile customers however have a secure profile already available on their Xfinity Mobile devices, so they do not have to download the Xfinity WiFi Hotspot app.
Xfinity has some featured hotpots too, and these are easily identifiable on the hotspot map by special icons. These hotspots are open to all and can be used by everyone in that location - even people who don't use Xfinity services. And, using the complimentary hotspot access from Xfinity is pretty convenient as well.
To connect to a featured hotspot all you have to do is:
Featured hotspots are very useful, but guest access is not available everywhere. So before you go to any place with the hope of connecting to this network, make sure you have scouted the area well, and you’re sure featured Xfinity hotspots are available. Be mindful, however - WiFi through featured hotspots implies you are on an open network, not a secure connection.
As long as you are connected to the hotspot, you will have access to Xfinity WiFi. However, once you leave the range of the hotspot or remain inactive for a certain period of time, you’ll be disconnected. Fortunately, once you have registered a device to the network via the Xfinity WiFi hotspot app, you do not have to sign in every time. Your device is set for an automatic sign-in whenever in it is the range of the XFINITY network.
If you have an Apple device, things are slightly different. The MAC Randomization feature makes your device connect via a random MAC address, so you will have to sign in again if you have not accessed the Xfinity Hotspot network in more than six weeks or more. This ensures that your WiFi experience with Xfinity is always secure.
