FOX is no stranger in American homes. But a few interesting facts about the 4th most-watched American network in 2021 maybe new for many of you even if you’ve grown up watching The Simpsons.
Following its launch in 1986, the “fourth network” challenged the domination of the Big Three i.e. ABC, CBS and NBC which had ruled the U.S. Television scene since the 1950s. The grand inauguration of its Sunday night lineup in 1987 introduced us to classics like Married… with Children and The Tracy Ullman Show, soon followed by drama and comedy ? 21 Jump Street, Mr. President and Duet.
Despite modest success, during the first three years the FOX programming lineup did not create a big bang ? until the debut of the now longest-running American sitcom, as well as the longest-running American scripted primetime TV series, and our beloved The Simpsons!
The documentary series Cops and America’s Most Wanted also debuted around the same time and remained staples on the network for about 20 years. In the 1990s FOX brought forward soap operas to American home screens ? with primetime dramas for the younger audience, such as Beverley Hills 90210, which later turned into the network’s longest-running drama.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, titles such as The X-Files, Ally McBeal, The ‘70s Show, Family Guy, and reality shows like Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire, Temptation Island, Married by America, and Joe Millionaire, drew in a mass audience. And we also saw acclaimed dramas such as Bones and comedies like Malcom in the Middle filling up the FOX programming lineup.
Little by little FOX started to beat ABC and NBC at ratings, and in 2005 emerged as the most-watched broadcast network in the 18-49 demographic, holding to its rank until 2012, and regaining it in 2020.
Today the FOX broadcast TV network is not the only one operated by the Fox Corporation ? FOX News, FOX Business, FOX Sports (1&2), and FOX Deportes is part of its cable network lineup in the U.S. The American iteration of FOX Life, originally launched as an international pay-tv channel in 2003, is however due to being shuttered by the end of March 2022.
The Xfinity channel lineup carries not only the FOX broadcast network but sister channels. You are likely to enjoy all FOX networks in your Popular and Ultimate, or Extra and Preferred lineups, depending on which is available at your location. If however you are subscribed to a skinny Cable bundle with Choice TV, you’ll only have the flagship broadcast TV network among the Xfinity TV channels you can access.
While in most Xfinity service locations, you’re likely to find FOX Sports 1 and 2 as well as FOX Deportes in the lineup, depending on the demographic, in some areas it may not be so. But luckily for the most part, unlike quite a few other cable TV services, Xfinity TV does not limit access to FOX Sports 2 to the top tier alone. To get Fox Deportes and other Spanish channels, make sure you have the eligible add-ons and packages. Check out what's on offer by Comcast Xfinity en Español.
