In a zone somewhere between a wild night out and strong bonds of female friendship, this one is slightly different from your typical sappy romantic movie. It is one of Netflix’s better attempts to deliver a rom-com with a twist. The story centers on a young woman who is leaving for San Francisco, where she has landed her dream job. But in a sad turn of events, before she leaves town, her boyfriend of 9 years breaks up with her. Devastated, she and her two best friends decide to have a last wild night out together before her departure, but crosses paths with her ex. 2. 50 First Dates – 2004

Cast

Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Dan Aykroyd, Rob Schneider, Blake Clark, and Sean Astin

Synopsis

When it comes to the best rom-com Adam Sandler has starred in, 50 First Dates has got to be one of the top 3s.

Set in Hawaii the movie depicts Sandler as a veterinarian, who is living a playboy lifestyle with no strings attached, when he crosses paths with a lovely young woman and hits it off. But much to his surprise, when they meet up for breakfast the next day, she doesn’t seem to have any recollection of their earlier interaction. In an interesting turn of events, he learns Barrymore suffers from a rare disease that is pretty similar to short-term memory loss. Yet he tries to make the best out of the situation, and continues to woo her with a series of “first” dates and “chance” meetings, winning her over day after day in an attempt to have a meaningful relationship.

The characters of Lucy and Henry are portrayed impeccably by Barrymore and Sandler. The twosome imparts a sweet romantic vibe, for which they also won an MTV Award for the Best on-screen Team.

3. Always Be My Maybe – 2019

Cast

Ali Wong, Michael Golamco, Randall Park, and Keanu Reeves

Synopsis

There is something very special about high school romance that makes its way into adulthood. This movie is Netflix’s another delightful attempt to breathe new life into rom-coms, and has turned out to be pretty successful at that since its release in 2019. The film depicts the story of two childhood friends who encounter each other years after their brief teenage fling ends badly. To their surprise, the chemistry between the two is still alive. Despite the story starting a little slow, it picks the beat and delivers intriguing twists and turns. Watch to find out if Marcus’ fears and Sasha's passion for her demanding career, allow the twosome to come together after all!

4. Let It Snow – 2019

Cast

Isabela Merced, Jacob Batalon, Joan Cusack, Kiernan Shipka, Liv Hewson, Odeya Rush, Mitchell Hope, and Shameik Moore

Synopsis

Some critics have called it a “cheesy teenage X-mas rom-com tale” and others “a familiar gift worth unwrapping”. Whether you perceive it as a teenage take on a romantic movie classic like Love Actually, or “a silly movie with a lot of heart”, chances are its moments of sweetness will outweigh the blandness of the ‘’holiday formula”. The cast is talented, and the characters quirky. All in all the film makes for an endearing viewing experience because of how it makes you feel regardless of age.

Let It Snow depicts an exceptional cast playing small-town teens who fall in and out of love on Christmas Eve as a snow blizzard hits their town. So if you don’t mind following the twists and turns of well-balanced plotlines, and overlapping love stories for a brief 90 minutes or so, tune in for a great mix of romance, festivity and more!

5. Marriage Story – 2019

Cast

Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Alan Alda, Laura Dern, Ray Liotta, Julie Haggerty, and Merritt Wever

Synopsis

We can’t look at this one as a sappy romantic movie, because there is such a plenty of drama in there. But, at its core it really is a love story. Different from a typical one you’d watch on Valentine’s Day, the film centers around Charlie and Nicole, allowing a real-life look at love, marriage and divorce. Filled with raw emotion, humor and heartache, it shows how sometimes relationships don’t work out the way we want them to, but that doesn’t mean they are not worth it. While Charlie and Nicole don’t end up together, the chemistry between the two tells love exists despite all the dramatic twists and turns of their relationship.

If you have lived through a divorce and/or enjoy a really solid relationship, this one can be a unique fit for you to tune into.

6. Silver Linings Playbook – 2012

Cast

Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jackie Weaver, Chris Tucker, Anupam Kher

Synopsis

This movie is not just a love story or any other rom-com. As one critic said “it takes you through the emotional wringer but sends you out of the theatre on a high note”. Because it is also a story of self-acceptance in the face of mental health problems.

The movie depicts the dark side of love, and how people can find their way despite tragedies if only they are true to themselves. Pat (Bradley Cooper) is a former teacher, who moves back to his parent’s house after spending a brief time at a mental institution following his breakup with ex-wife Nikki. While he is still focused on getting Nikki back, he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) who he strikes more than a chord with. They connect in the context of their experience of surviving mental health issues, but it is not all rosy.

Watch the movie to find out how their mutual dynamics play out. The story is engaging and the characters believable!

7. Destination Wedding – 2018

Cast

Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, and DJ Dallenbach

Synopsis

This is your typical modern-age love story where two misanthropic but talkative people bump into each other on their way to the same-destination-wedding. Lindsay is still recovering from a heartbreak caused by her previous relationship, while Frank carries the baggage of his bad family history. The two know of each other because the groom is Frank’s half-brother and Lindsay’s ex-fiancé. Although, they do not start off amicably, once they decide to ditch activities at the wedding and spend time with each other, the underlining chemistry of their connection begins to factor in. Lindsay wants to be in a relationship with Frank, but he insists love is pointless and a relationship would not work.

Watch to find out if Frank is able to escape his misanthropic self, and acknowledge their mutual connection. It maybe a typical take on love, it is nonetheless an interesting story wherein Ryder and Reeves both do full justice to their characters.
