The year 2022 is full of DC and Marvel superhero movies. Ten superhero movies are coming out in 2022, some of which have already hit the theaters, while many are yet to come out. Given that, perhaps 2022 will be the year when superhero movie fatigue is proven to exist.

There has been a long-running debate over superhero fatigue, with critics, actors, and filmmakers anticipating a decline in the popularity of movies based on comic books. The problem is far from new, as it dates back to the release of The Avengers in 2012.

Nonetheless, superhero movies continue to conquer the box office of Hollywood, despite 2020 being a mild year when compared to years past; 2021 saw a resurgence of superhero movies and even TV shows, as the MCU expands into the TV industry by releasing hits like Loki and WandaVision.

Following the success of Avengers: Endgame, which surpassed Avatar's record at the box office, Marvel continues to dominate the superhero movie industry, and with the success of Joker and Aquaman, there's no doubt that DC has learned how to compete. It seems likely that superhero movies will remain popular for decades to come, with Marvel and DC releasing huge hits regularly.

In this article, we’ll talk about the eight superhero movies from both Marvel and DC that are yet to hit the big screen. So without further ado, let’s dive right into it!

Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness

Release Date: May 6, 2022

Six years after his MCU debut, Benedict Cumberbatch is returning to the role of Doctor Strange in 2022. The movie also stars Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), who recently acquired her comic-style costume and powers in WandaVision. Marvel movies rarely reveal much about their plots, but it looks like Nightmare is going to be a major villain. After Scott Derrickson's exit, Sam Raimi has taken over the direction of the movie. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, the multiverse is explored, so the film is likely to tackle the implications.

DC League of Super-Pets

Release Date: May 20, 2022

In 2022, DC is releasing its own animated film: DC League of Super-Pets. Directed by Sam Levine and Jared Stern, the co-writers of Wreck-it Ralph, it is set to feature animals with superpowers from DC Comics, such as Streaky the Supercat, Krypto the SuperDog, Beppo the Super Monkey, Comet the Super Horse, and more.

There have been few details about the movie, however, it has been revealed that Kevin Hart, Marc Maron, and, the one and only, Dwayne Johnson, will be voicing  Ace the Bat-Hound, Lex Luthor, and Krypto the Superdog respectively. The film is an adaptation of Legion of Super-Pets, a group of super-pets that debuted in DC Comics in the 1960s.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Release Date: July 8, 2022

In the fourth Thor film, director Taika Waititi is back at the helm to write and direct the film. After this installment, Thor will be the first MCU character to have four standalone movies. Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth will reprise their roles as Valkyrie and Thor, respectively, and Natalie Portman will return to the role of Jane Foster. A role she last played in Thor: The Dark World. Thor: Love and Thunder is going to introduce Jane as Thor's female counterpart.

Among the new characters are Christian Bale playing the role of Gorr the God Butcher, and Russel Crowe playing Zeus. Gorr would be the main antagonist of the film. This new installment of Thor has yet to be released after Marvel delayed its release for several months. Its initial release was set for May 2022 but has now been moved to July 2022.

Black Adam

Release Date: July 29, 2022

Having been delayed and removed from the movie schedule for some time, the movie Black Adam is scheduled to premiere in July 2022. Featuring Dwayne Johnson as the main lead, with director Jaume Collet-Serra taking the directorial position of the movie. The screenplay writers are Rory Haines, Adam Sztykiel, and Sohrab Noshirvani who refer to the movie as “The Disruptor”. After being in development since 2014, it appears that the film's time has finally come in 2022.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2

Release Date: October 7, 2022

The box office numbers for Sony's animated first Spider-Man movie, which was released in 2018, were impressive, but its greatest achievement was the overwhelmingly positive reaction from critics. The movie even went on to win an Academy Award for the Best Animated Feature Film, so Sony Pictures no doubt plans to continue Miles Morales' adventures in a sequel.

In the same way as the first movie, multiple versions of Spider-Man will be included, including a key character from a Japanese Spider-Man series from the late 1970s, who will be the main character.

The Flash

Release Date: November 4, 2022

The Flash, which was initially planned for a release in 2018, has been given a new release date, as well as a new director. Due to creative differences, several directors pulled out of the project, but Andy Muschietti was chosen to direct the movie in July 2021. Ezra Miller, who starred in Batman V Superman and Justice League as Barry Allen, will reprise his role as the Scarlet Speedster.

The Flash takes inspiration from the DC Comics crossover, Flashpoint, where Barry rewrites time in an attempt to prevent his mother's death. Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck are returning to their roles as Batman.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Release Date: November 11, 2022

Upon its release in February 2018, Black Panther broke more records than one can count, becoming the fifth Marvel Cinematic Universe film to surpass the $1 billion milestones. To date, it is MCU's biggest success aside from The Avengers.

After releasing the first Black Panther film four years ago, the highly anticipated sequel is about to hit theaters. As a result of the passing of the lead actor of the first film, Chadwick Boseman, this film will likely showcase other characters in Wakanda, as opposed to just Black Panther.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Release Date: December 16, 2022

The 2018 film, Aquaman by James Wan, proved to audiences – as well as the studio – that DC movies were no longer reliant on Superman or Batman for box office success. After exceeding $1 billion at the box office worldwide, it was predictable that the film would be followed by a sequel.

Approximately two months after the movie was released, Warner Bros. announced it was developing a sequel. No matter what the story is about, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will feature Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta and Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master again in this movie.
