Entertainment standards have been elevating without a halt for many years courtesy the rapid technological advancements in recent years. With the increased number of online entertainment opportunities, the idea of cutting the cord has also gained unprecedented traction among TV watching masses in the U.S. The popularity of subscription video on demand (SVOD) platforms like Netflix and Prime Video, as well as live streaming services such as YouTube TV and Hulu+ Live, is a testimony to changing consumer demand. Essentially all of this has been possible because of the widespread availability of high-speed internet.

Keeping in touch with evolving consumer choice, Xfinity from Comcast, introduced Xfinity Flex to its internet customers back in 2019. While the device costs $5/mo. when you included one with an Xfinity Internet plan, current offers get you the Flex 4K device at no added cost. Meaning, you can stream your favorite content via reliable and fast internet delivered over the largest Gig-speed network in the U.S., totally FREE of cost!

So if you are convinced it is time to cut the cord, and not bundle cable TV with internet, take a look at one of the cheapest ways to stream on-demand content with Xfinity offers. Explore what exactly Xfinity Flex 4K is, and what all it brings to your screen when you subscribe to Xfinity Internet.

What is Xfinity Flex 4K?

Xfinity Flex 4K is a voice-controlled streaming TV box that is essentially built like the Xfinity X1 entertainment operating system and gives you a variety of popular streaming apps, all in one digitally integrated place. The good thing is you do not need to download any of the apps. All are automatically loaded onto the Xfinity Flex device. All you need to do is sign into your account, and start streaming.

The compact and minimal design of the device packs user-friendly features which notch up your entertainment experience. You watch in 4K and enjoy a new world of sound with Dolby Atmos. While the award-winning Xfinity Voice Remote, which the provider also gives out with its Cable TV service, makes it easier to search for content across all available apps. No need to scroll through listings. Just press and hold the mic button on the remote, and search via genre, actor, or title.

Now to a couple of downsides. The device does not offer any storage space as most popular streaming TV boxes in the market do.

How to Set up Xfinity Flex

Here is what you need to do to get the Xfinity Flex device up and running:

  1. Make sure your Xfinity Internet service is activated, and you are able to connect devices to your Xfinity in-home WiFi network.
  2. Connect the Xfinity Flex device to your HDMI TV. Use the HDMI cable from the Getting Started Kit to make this connection. The HDMI port is usually the largest one at the rear of the TV.
  3. Next, plug the power adapter into a nearby electrical outlet, and connect its other end to the USB-C port on the Flex device. The USB-C port would be the smallest at the rear of the device. Try to avoid using a power outlet controlled by a dimmer.
  4. When the power indicator light comes on, the device is ready to use.
  5. Now get the voice remote, and remove the plastic tab from the back. You must pull the tab towards the top of the remote. Make sure you are not more than 10 ft. away from the device and the remote is aimed directly at the device.
  6. Wait for the Welcome screen and the on-screen instructions. You will be asked to select the language, and also if you wish to use Voice Guidance, in which case you will receive verbal instructions.
  7. The Flex device will connect automatically to the WiFi if you have an xFi Gateway with Xfinity Internet. Otherwise, you will have to set up the connection manually.
To connect manually, press the Info (i) button on the remote. Use any of the options that display on the screen when you scan for available networks. Select your home WiFi network and enter the password to connect.
Note: You can also use an Ethernet cable to connect Xfinity Flex to the internet. Or connect the device by using the WPS button.

Now, in case you activated your Xfinity Internet service using the Xfinity app, your account would be already verified. But otherwise, you will have to run through a simple activation process. All you will be asked on-screen is to verify your phone number with the last 4 digits. You can also choose another option to verify the account, e.g. by text message or via your account info.

Once all is done and over with, you can pick a name for your device. The Xfinity Flex device will optimize for surround sound and HD video automatically.
