Finally, the entertainment industry is catching on to changing times and giving women space they rightfully deserve so they too can share their talent, perspectives, and stories. The one network at the forefront of this revolution is Lifetime—which has long endeavored to create and develop content that depicts women’s issues and brings strong female leads to the screen—giving women relatable programming to watch, and characters that instill inspiration and confidence.
The network’s journey was quite full of upheavals, to say the least. Lifetime suffered monetary loss and did not gain substantial viewership initially, but 4 years after its launch i.e. in 1988 with Patricia Fili’s induction as the head of programming, many changes were brought about—the network’s signature talk show Attitudes began to refocus on women’s issues, Lifetime acquired rights to syndicated network hits, and the first of Lifetime movies went into production. It was almost as if the Lifetime network had started coming to life.
Later, with Doug McCormick—“the man who led a women’s channel”—the network also started airing limited women’s sports coverage from the WNBA and America’s Cup. While mutual ties with women’s organizations, public service announcements about women’s issues, and a new tagline “Lifetime—Television for Women”—the network continued to break new grounds. Lifetime films even came to target upscale couples aged 24-44 who watched TV together. They were given content that not only depicted strong women protagonists, but more stereotypical male characters which men, in general, found more appealing.
Following the acquisition by A&E Networks in 2009, Lifetime saw another female in a leading role—Nancy Dubuc assumed the position of President of Entertainment & Media at A&E Networks, and Lifetime was added to her portfolio in 2011. With Dubuc, Lifetime underwent a complete rebranding and emerged with a new tagline “Your Life. Your Time”. And, little by little, the idea of embracing female empowerment continued to gain momentum. Talented female writers, producers, and directors were given a chance—who challenged the misogynic traditions in Hollywood and carved a whole new genre of “women’s entertainment”.
Lifetime content questions the tropes in the film industry and seeks to reflect, discuss and comment on women’s issues. Relatable characters and storylines paired with the female perspective make Lifetime shows a hit among women in particular. The reason why today the network is carried by most major TV service providers in the U.S. as well as popular streaming platforms. And, reaches an estimated 93 million U.S. households with a pay-tv subscription.
Originally created to compete with channels like We TV and Oxygen, Lifetime Real Women—a Lifetime sister channel—offers diverse programming. But, since it’s a complementary channel it doesn’t air any original programming—rather broadcasts game shows, drama, comedy, and reality TV that have already or are currently being aired on the main Lifetime channel. Lifetime Real Women also showcases programming that Lifetime holds rights to, but does not carry due to its current programming format. This curated selection of shows makes for a great viewing experience.
Launched in the year 1998, Lifetime Movie Network (LMN) has an ever-growing fan base, a testament to its great programming.
Like the other two Lifetime channels, this one too is focused on women, and the content keeps female issues at the forefront. However, you don’t need to be a woman to enjoy what the channel has to offer. With great direction and engaging script, made-for-television movies on LMN make for an entertaining watch for all who tune in. For instance, Tempting Fate and Family Pictures—hard to find on any other network, these Lifetime originals will have you glued to the screen until the very end.
With so much to offer then, Lifetime is one channel you won’t want to miss. The reason why Wide Open West, better known as WOW! includes the channel in its lineup.
WOW! offers its services in 8 states. While its coverage is rather limited compared to other cable TV providers, quality service makes it one of the top choices in regions where it operates.
