Christmas movies have become more like a holiday perennial. Nothing gets one into the spirit of Christmas more than gathering with the loved ones and busting out a playlist loaded with timeless Christmas classics. Not sure why, but holiday movies serve as a perfect therapy. They have the key to turning frowns upside down.
Speaking of Christmas classics. How many times while channel surfing did you stumble upon the movie A Christmas Story? It is one of the quintessential Christmas classics that no one complains watching, even if it’s for the billionth time.
A Christmas Story is adapted from a small section of Jean Shepherd’s novel In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. The movie was released in 1983 and it was initially deemed as a sleeper film. A Sleeper Film is the one that does unsuccessfully on release but becomes a success later on. Over the years, A Christmas Story garnered a considerable amount of attention and earned critical accolades from across the world. What helped this movie become this popular? TV airings and home video release. Almost every other American network runs marathons of A Christmas Story each holiday season. It’s no surprise if you’ve memorized every dialogue of this movie by heart. We have too!
A Christmas Story has become an annual Christmas special. From Rotten Tomatoes to Metacritic, every prominent consensus site has something good to say about this Christmas classic.
The story of this movie revolves around a 9-year-old boy, Ralphie. With Christmas approaching, Ralphie asks his parents for the perfect gift – a Red Ryder Carbine Action Air Rifle. His desire ends up with his mum’s rejection, along with weirdly similar warnings from Miss Shields (his teacher) and Santa Claus at Higbee’s Store: “You’ll shoot your eye out!” Thinking that adults are mean and never onboard with what he wants, Ralphie turns a deaf ear to the advice.
But, since Christmas is all about miracles. Ralphie finally gets the gift of his dreams. Excited, he runs outside to try his new gun but gets himself in a terrible accident that nearly made him lose his eye. Realizing that maybe adults aren’t that mean after all, Ralphie learns a lesson. Next time, he’ll think twice before turning a deaf ear to the advice of his elders.
